Ronice Goebel joins us to talk about the history of the Kangaroo Hoppet and her involvement with the Birkebeiner ski club over her 28 years of participating and volunteering. We discuss just how important this race is for the community and how it fits into the bigger picture of international racing. Ronice also took some time to share her thoughts on the proposed Falls Creek developments that may alter the current trail network as we see it today. Ronice was very diplomatic in her response when addressing the issue and provided some good points worth thinking about. Please note, Those Tele Guys are very much sitting on the fence with this issue, but it's good to hear a voice from the cross-country skiing community about this topic. We would love to hear a voice about the proposal from the resort, so the door is always open!

Cam Walker and editor of the Mountain Journal wrote an information focused overview of what is proposed including the opposition. He has also for the record included his views on the matter..."I do not support the winter use of the facility due to the increased noise and traffic footprint of the resort - pushing cars out into the Rocky Valley area, and do not support the winter clearing of the road to allow cars to access the site."

"Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club is not supportive of the proposed winter activation of the Lakeside precinct. In its current form the proposed development will adversely impact on the XC trail network and significantly affect the utility of the BNSC day lodge. There appear to be very few benefits to XC, and very little scope to compensate for the negative impacts on the trail network. The view of the club is that the current proposal, and in particular the proposed clearing of the Bogong High Plains Road in winter, will not lead to a good outcome for XC skiing at Falls Creek and will likely impact on the reputation of Falls Creek as an XC destination."
The position document was sent to FCRM on 16th July 2022.
The CEO states:
"Currently several plans are being pursued to help alleviate this issue with the addition of up to 400 new parking spaces having been scoped at Bay 8.5 (Ropers Saddle) and as part of the ANARE shed redevelopment at the Lakeside. These spaces will provide for overnight (Ropers) and day parking (Lakeside). "
"Resort Management are continuing discussions with the department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on both these options as priorities."
